Pierre Alechinsky is a Belgian painter and graphic artist. In November 1948, the artist’s association Cobra was founded in Paris. Together with Christian Dotremont, Alechinsky formed the driving force behind the Belgian Department of the Cobra Group. In 1954 Alechinsky came into contact with Chinese painting through the Chinese painter Walasse Ting. In addition to Chinese influence, Japanese art had an important influence and he began to show an interest in oriental calligraphy.
