Revised and corrected edition of the French text of Chauliac’s Chirurgia Magna, with extensive commentary by Laurent Joubert (1529-83), Chancellor of the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier, then the most famous medical university in the world. The French translationi s by his son, Isaac Joubert. Guy de Chauliac (1298–1368) studied medicine in Montpellier, Toulouse, Paris and Bologna. He is considered the first French surgeon and the founder of modern surgery. Chauliac was the first to distinguish between different types of hernias and offer radical care for them.
His work, written around 1363, includes a study of fractures and a large section on mouth diseases and dental care. The woodcut illustrations of surgical instruments are mostly adapted from Paré's work.
In good condition, the leather cover and the spine with four raised bands and golden fillets are intact but have abrasions on the plates and edges; the interior is slightly reddened and there are water stains on a few pages and handwritten notes on the endpapers (see photos).
