Captain Sir Richard F. Burton
Personal Narrative Of A Pilgrimage To Al-Madinah & Meccah

George Bell & Sons, London 1898
2 volumes complete with frontispieces, fold-out plans, map and plates
915 pp. total

Burton’s celebrated account of his journey, disguised as a Muslim pilgrim, to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, where entry by non-Muslims was strictly forbidden. This “exploit of linguistic and cultural virtuosity” made Burton famous, and the account has become a classic of travel literature.

Burton's trek to Mecca was dangerous, and his caravan was attacked by bandits (a common experience at the time). As he put it, though "... neither Koran nor Sultan enjoin the death of Jew or Christian intruding within the columns that note the sanctuary limits, nothing could save a European detected by the populace, or one who after pilgrimage declared himself an unbeliever". The pilgrimage entitled him to the title of Hajji and to wear the green head wrap.

Condition: Complete 2-volume set with publisher’s original maroon boards with title and author in gilt lettering on the spine. 46 illustrations within the two volumes, including two frontispieces (one of them a color chromolithograph frontispiece of 'Richard Burton as Mirza Abdullah'), engraved plates, and 2 large fold-out plans, and fold out map.

Both spines show some heavy traces of wear (discolored, rubbed, gilt lettering fading). On the inside, both volumes are in good condition. Occasional foxing throughout, especially at the very beginning and very end of each volume. Binding overall good and tight, with clean and square pages. All plates and fold-out pieces clean and present. Fold-out maps and plans with some rips and tears along the edges (see photos). All in all, well-preserved copies given the age.
