Erycius Puteanus, latinization of Eric van der Putte.

Born in Venlo, studied in Dordrecht and Collogne where he took degree of Master of Arts. Then followed, at Leuven, the lectures on ancient history by Justus Lipsius.
In 1597 travelled to Italy, Cardinal Federigo Borromeo appointment him professor of Latin at Palatine School of Milan (1600-1606.
Then States of Brabant offered him chair left vacant by Lipsius at Leuven. He taught at Collegium Trilingue at the University of Leuven for forty years, Archduke Albert appointed him his honorary counsellor (1612), After 1603 historiographer to Philip III of Spain. He was almost driven into exile by King James I of England, who wrongly believed him to be the author of Corona Regia (1615), a scandalous satire about James's parentage and behaviour.
