The Messageries Maritimes, which established the first French postal routes in the Mediterranean in 1851, was one of the main French shipping companies until the mid-20th century.
In order to meet the demands of its wealthy customers, the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes enlisted the help of the most famous decorators, cabinetmakers, upholsterers, glassmakers and goldsmiths. "The purpose of the furnishings on board the ship was to make the rich passengers forget that they had left the safety of the mainland for the perils of the sea."
