at the same time as the quarto version of Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de Buffon
A rare complete set of 18 volumes, published
from 1770 to 1785, in a well-made uniform period blond marbled and glazed calfskin binding, spine with five raised bands adorned with two red and olive green morocco labels and delicately embossed gilded fleurons within the compartments, fillet on the cover edges, marbled edges.
Edition esteemed for the remarkable illustrations by De Seve, composed of 261/262 plates engraved in intaglio, in the first print edition of the reduced quarto edition (there is an additional plate (No. 6) in Volume 15 but two plates are missing, respectively No. 9 in Volume 7 and No. 6 in Volume 16, without frontispiece portrait).
A very lovely copy, fresh and decorative. The bindings are sound, the leather on some volumes have imperfections: fragments missing on 14 crowns (headcap or tailcap), rubbed, damaged or blunt corners, The starts of cracks on the joints or fully cracked (but not affecting the hold of the binding) of Volumes 1, 6, 7, 11, 14, 16. Fresh and clean inside. Lightly browned paper, virtually no foxing. The plates are in good condition.
