Tony Alexander Adams is an English football coach and former footballer (central defender).
He has been a member of the Order of the British Empire since 1999 and a member of the English Football Hall of Fame since 2004.
He made his debut at the age of 17 in 1983 with the Arsenal shirt against Sunderland and on 1 January 1988 he became captain, the youngest of all time for the London club, a role he held for the next 14 years. After winning the League Cup in 1987, he led the team to win the 1989 championship, won in the last minutes of the final day thanks to goal difference. The victory was also repeated two years later, in 1991.
He returned to permanently wear the shirt of his national team, of which he became captain together with David Platt, after the 1992 European Championships, in which he did not take part due to injury. In the meantime, at club level he won the FA Cup and the League Cup in 1993 and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994. He participated in the 1996 European Championships, where England was eliminated in the semifinals by Germany.
Soon after the European championship, he publicly admitted his alcoholism problems and began a successful detox. Adams, however, still got great satisfactions, such as the 1998 championship and FA Cup double followed by that of 2002, thus ending his career after 668 matches with the London club.
