Beautiful portrait of an Anglican pastor dated October 18, 1699.
Oil on panel, 39x31.5 cm, with a golden frame carved with leaves.
As per the available 1982 expertise by Didier Bogart: it is a work by Jean De Baen (1633-1702), known above all as a portrait painter and pupil of Peimans in La Haye and Jacob Adrianensz Backer in Amsterdam.
The work depicts a character sitting three-quarter on a red armchair. There is an inscription on the bottom right, on the base of a column, reading: ‘Aetatis suae 71 /Anno Dni 1699 / 18 Oct’; while on the back of two books are the inscriptions: ‘THE TWELVE GREAT THINGS OF GODS’ and ‘THE BIBLE’.
The work is in good condition, with a small craquelure on the background at the top of the panel. The frame shows several signs of ageing.
