Johannes van der Waeyen wrote this work as a refutation, after having examined the work ‘Betooverde Weereld’. In 1691, the first two parts of De Betooverde Weereld (The World Bewitched) by the Frisian/Amsterdam preacher Balthasar Bekker appeared. In this book, the author tried to limit the devil's influence on earth and debunk other forms of superstition on Cartesian grounds. Balthasar Bekker's banishment of the devil was a thorn in the flesh of many. Also his free interpretation of the Bible and his criticism of the Statenvertaling were particularly met with resistance from the established church. Van der Waeijen was taught by Essenius and Voetius in Utrecht, where he attended Latin school. He also took classes at colleges abroad. He was a minister in Leeuwarden.
This work by Johannes van der Waeyen is in very good condition! The book is bound in half parchment and has a beautiful title on the spine. The boards are covered with ‘elefantenhaut’ (a beautiful marble). The bookblock is of very good quality. The title page has a stamp, and so does page 15. Furthermore, the title page lacks two small pieces, and there is a note at the top. Overall, a beautiful book, no missing pages were found. Counting / typing errors at the buyer's risk. No bidding on Sundays please. The pictures are an essential part of the description. Last leaf has a small note.
The book has 651 pages.
