--

Jules Cavaillès was born in 1901 in Carmaux. He followed the artistic teachings of Pierre and Paul-Albert Laurens. Finding it difficult to make a living from his painting, he opened a small business and regularly welcomed his friends Henri Matisse, André Derain, Marc Chagall and Pierre Bonnard.

His interest was primarily with the Fauves and his works were inspired by Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck, and Braque. He then became passionate about the works of Renoir and Bonnard. The latter played a vital role in the artistic development of Cavaillès, who studied his paintings during their encounters in the South of France.

His spirit, his joie de vivre, and his enthusiasm were known and appreciated by all.
