Moerenhout was a Flemish painter apprenticed to the Antwerp painter Hendrik Van der Poorten, who devoted himself to scenes with animals. Moerenhout would also make this genre its specialization. He studied at the Antwerp Art Academy from 1817 to 1820, after which he further developed his talent in the studio of the famous painter Horace Vernet in Paris.
