A children’s fantasy written by Charles Dickens in 1867 (but purporting to be from the pen of a child aged seven), ‘The Magic Fishbone’ was the second in a group of four stories entitled ‘Holiday Romance’, originally published in a children’s magazine in the United States, and then in the British periodical ‘All the Year Round’, in 1868. ‘Holiday Romance’ was first published in book form in 1874.
In the story, Princess Alicia is given a magic fishbone by her fairy godmother, which she uses to improve the fortunes of her parents, the King and Queen, and her 18 brothers and sisters.
The drawings in this charming Constable edition of 1911 are by Susan Beatrice Pearse (1878-1980), a children’s book illustrator best known for her popular Ameliaranne series, published between 1920 and 1950. ‘The Magic Fishbone’ is among her earliest published works.
