Rare first edition of this charming adaptation of three classic fairy tales, with a beautiful cover design plus numerous chromolithographic illustrations by Caroline Paterson (1856-1911).
A younger sister of the artist Helen Allingham, Paterson was a noted watercolourist, specializing in domestic landscapes and interiors, often featuring children and always depicting a quintessentially idyllic view of rural England. She also forged a successful career as a children’s illustrator and, despite marrying in 1892, continued to work and exhibit until 1904.
Similarly to Edmund Evans – the premier engraver and printer of toy books in London from the mid-1800s onwards – the Irish firm of Marcus Ward was well known in the area of chromolithography, chiefly as a printer of greeting cards, but also publishing children’s books, illustrated by artists such as Walter Crane and Kate Greenaway.
‘Three Fairy Princesses’ is among Marcus Ward’s most elusive titles. I can see only one other copy currently for sale online.
No owner inscriptions. Contents with soiling, staining, tears and wear as shown in photos, a few small pencil marks (not very noticeable), foxing to last page. Binding repaired, including archival tape to seven hinges. Front free endpaper missing, rear free endpaper with offsetting, plus foxing to reverse. Binding loose, slightly bowed, with lean.
