Heianjo-style Tsuba
An Iron Tsuba circle shape with Kozuka & Kougai holes
The phoenix is the mythical animal that originally came from China, and it's called "Hou Ou" in Japanese. It is said that it looks like peacocks or peahens. Hou is male, and Ou is female; they are a pair of male and female. Chinese phoenixes are engraved on both sides. It is famous that these birds have been being used as decoration or symbol even in myths, especially in East Asia countries. It is said that Houou appears only when a brilliant emperor was born, so this bird is a symbol of good omen.
