Markus Lüpertz (painter)
Markus Lüpertz is a German painter, graphic artist and sculptor. He is one of the most famous German artists of the present day. His picture objects are characterized by suggestive power and archaic monumentality.
Born: 25 April 1941 (age 79), Reichsgau Sudetenland
Epoch: Neo-Expressionism
Markus Lüpertz, today honorary doctor and rector of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, is one of the most dazzling figures on the German art scene. As the "New Savage" in the sixties, he made his name with expressive, figurative painting. The interests of the "painter prince" range from stage design, his own verse and prose poetry to self-played free jazz on the piano.
His large sculptures, begun in 1980, have triggered fierce controversies in various European cities. Thematically, Lüpertz is mainly rooted in European history, Greek mythology and its symbolism. He only briefly touched on abstraction; today he is considered one of the most important representatives of Neo-Expressionism worldwide.
For more than twenty years Markus Lüpertz has been playing with jazz legends of the band TTT (Triple Trip Touch). In 1983 TTT was founded by the musician Frank Wollny and the painter Ralf Winkler alias A.R. Penck. For Penck, at that time on drums and keyboard, Markus Lüpertz came in the middle of the nineties. About ten musicians and Markus Lüpertz play groovy free jazz in changing line-ups. And anyone who thinks that music is not a visual art will be surprised how the order of art genres suddenly dissolves.
