Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016. Malick Sidibé’s first known work was reporting photographs, taken during the parties organised by young people fond of music and freedom as the country prepared for independence.
In 1962, he opened the ‘Malick Studio’ in Bamako. Studio portraits made up the bulk of his work. People would come from all over to have their portraits shot with Bamako’s eye. He was noted at the first ‘Rencontres de la Photographie’ in Bamako then he exhibited at the Cartier Foundation in Paris and in the greatest galleries and museums in the world. He received the Hasselblad prize in 2003 then the Lion d’Or in 2007.
