We are pleased to present this rare original first edition copy, containing volumes 3 & 4 only, of the French translation of Austen's first novel, Sense & Sensibility.
‘Raison et Sensibilité, ou les Deux Manières d'aimer’ marked the first time Austen was ever translated into another language. Published in 1815, it is very much contemporaneous with Austen works published in English, this translation came before the 1st English edition of Emma (in 1816).
‘Freely translated’ by Mme Isabelle de Montolieu, the Swiss novelist and translator who was better known than Austen at the time of publication. Montolieu made alterations to the text, as well as changing the ending of the book to fit what she thought were the trends of the time.
Ownership stamp with arms of Maupeou and ‘Bibliothèque de La Davière’, denoting that this volume was from the castle of La Davière in Sarthe, owned by the Maupeou family at the time of this book’s publication.
