XL pages + 12 pages. Very lovely tan half morocco binding with corners by Canape. Gilded upper edge, smooth spine elaborately adorned with fleurons. Preserved covers. Bookplate of Lucien Allienne, bibliophile. Notable is the prestigious bookbinder and the meticulous care given to the binding. Georges Canape (1864-1940) was and remains one of the most prestigious French bookbinders,
48 illustrations by Malteste enhanced by stencil. First edition with the text in calligraphic facsimile surrounded by large historiated coloured edges. 40 pages preceded by a portrait of the author and a lovely full-page title page, the 40 historiated pages are followed by 12 pages of typographical text.
This is a tale, written during the author's youth. It was previously unpublished. Member of the Académie Goncourt. Author adored by connoisseurs.
The aim of the collection of ten was to publish a series of unpublished tales illustrated by leading artists. There are texts by Huysmans, Hennique , Mirbeau and Jules Renard.
Condition: very good, insolated spine but this is so heavily adorned that the leather is barely visible. Very fresh inside.
Included: A half-title page "La Nef" with a message from the author to Gustave Samazeuilh (1877-1987), a French composer and music critic: "Avec tous mes remerciements."
