** BOXHORN (Hendrik), of Bocherinc, born ca.1545 in Brussels, passed away in Leiden 1631. Son of Melchior, undertaker in Brussels., and Gudula Labuse. He studied in Louvain in philosophy, was promoted to licentiatus theologiae and became a priest in 1571. Pastor and dean of the church of St. Germain in Thienen in Brabant, where he was later appointed as archpriest of the district and for his ‘vurigen ijver voor de beginselen van het Romanisme’, even as inquisitor. Doubt entered his mind by then: an affair with Sibylla Stijls made him leave the church and he left for the duchy Berg, where he first stayed in Mondorf and later in 1587, became minister in Wermelskirchen. He had by now moved to the side of the Reformation, though for the time being remained with the Lutherans. He helped the Lutheran municipality of Cologne from Wermelskirchen. His insights slowly changed and when he becomes minister in Woerden in 1592, where the Augsburg Confession was openly practised, he also has a reformed mindset.
Boxhorn was a man of great knowledge and with firm convictions: things he considered to be the truth, he would defend with the greatest force against any opponent. Many polemics by his hand are known. See NNBW 2, 237.
