One of the most luxurious Dutch publications of the 20th century, bound in batik-handled parchment.
(Theo NIEUWENHUIS). Jan HOFKER, Gedachten en Verbeeldingen. With an introduction by L. van Deyssel. With an original etched portrait of the author by Willem Witsen. Amsterdam, S.L. van Looy, 1906. Original (light) honey-coloured, full parchment with brown and light blue decorations and lettering (batik), combined with lines and dots, stamped in gold (signed ‘TH’, Theo Nieuwenhuis). All page edges are gilded. (10), 144 pp. One of the only fifty luxury copies on handmade paper by Van Gelder. First edition. Small dents around the name H. van Hofker on the front cover.
Amazing luxury parchment binding made in batik by Jan Mensing after a design by Theo Nieuwenhuis. This wonderful publication, one of the highlights of Dutch Art Nouveau book bindings, was distributed among friends and admirers of Hofker (1864-1945), a collaborator at the magazine De Nieuwe Gids and a friend of many of the 'Tachtigers'. Nieuwenhuis specially painted the monogram of the owner on the back cover of the sold copies. In this case likely ‘JU’ or ‘UJ’ (it has faded a bit), though there is no link with a name. The print run would have consisted of fifty copies, though as these were made as ordered, that number has likely not been reached. This copy is pictured in Ernst Braches’ Nieuwe Kunst: Bouwstoffen, volume 2, page 802.
