This is a rare, jewelled, bronze, Tibetan or Indian, four armed, Wrathful Tantric Diety/Bodhisattva. Most likely Marakara, as the iconography is the closest, or a similar Tantric Diety, such as a Varjayogini. From the mid 20th century, or earlier.

The emaciated body is very rare, interesting and unusual, reminiscent of the classic fasting Buddha statue. Indicating the effects/requirements of difficult austerity practices including yoga and starvation, to gain Tantric power.

With Turquoise and Ruby gemstones settings I've reset.

Standing on a lotus base, astride two figure's representative of delusion and ignorance.

With four hands holding:
A sword, 'kartika' (a vajra-handled flaying knife) in the right hand to cut to the difficulties encountered on the Tantric Path.
A drum, a 'damru' for the rhythm of chanting practices, often made from a human skull.
A ritual skull cap, a 'kapala', to drink ritual blood.

The figure is dressed in robes and garlands of severed heads.

In the figure's emaciated belly is shown the coiled up kundalini energy, the source of Tantric power and liberation.

With an elaborate jewelled tall crown, stern face with 3 eyes, strong dominant posture, demeanour, body jewellery ( long ear rings, and Indian beads symbolising enlightenment) tied up hair, sacred mudras, lotus flowers growing from the crown, iconic robes and attire. All these sacred attributes are representative of a classic and important Tantric Figure.

The base is open, has an old identity label on the inside.

Overall in good condition with a beautiful patina, wear and total loss to the original gilt ( although very small residue is possibly present, as can be seen in photos.)

I've personally carefully reset the 9 empty jewellery settings with geniune high quality, hand made, untreated, natural Persian Turquoise, and African Rubies ( I was a successful and acclaimed Jewellery Designer in Soho, London in the 1990s).

Turquoise x 2 ( 1.5 mm cabochons. Mohs Hardness scale 5-6)

Rubies x 7 ( 1.5 mm -3 mm Round cut. Heat treated. Mohs Hardness scale 9. Grade AAA. Carat. 0.01)

An unique Collectors piece, perfect Tantric Altar statue, gift, or powerful interior design statement.

All my statues are are kept under Buddhist and/or Taoist conditions. They are consecreated and purified ( I'm empowered to do this by my teachers, though I make no claims as to them therefore having any magical or talismatic powers as statues/dieties ) Income from these is to provide basic financial security for me and my personal retreat. It allows me to continue to train ( including travel to Asia etc to train with my Teachers) practice, and to teach off and online ( now all online) for free or donation. I buy from various auctions and collectors world wide. I offer statues as devotional support to anyone's practices, or simply to bring calm and peace to a home. It is contrary to my vows to engage in the business of selling holy objects for profit. Therefore I do not provide these objects in an ordinary way, thinking of them as goods to be bought and sold. Rather I'm making them available with the express wish to benefit others. All funds in excess of my costs help me to continue my activities.

Please Note :
Please do not bid if you are unable to pay. Bidders who fail to pay are blocked from future auctions by Catawiki.
