Old original Jingasa Samurai Helmet with gold makie triple bellflower family crest
Japan, Edo period, ca. 1800
This is a military hat that Samurai (Bushi) of the Toki clan used to wear. The Toki clan was a Japanese samurai clan.
The bellflower (kikyō) was used by the clan simply for its beauty, although the crest also held a symbolic meaning. According to legend, an ancestor of the Toki clan picked a bellflower to put on his armor at time of war, then proceeded to win the battle. Thus, the family adopted the flower for their family crest.
As a matter of historical interest, the bellflower is also the crest of Akechi Mitsuhide, who defeated Oda Nobunaga just before Nobunaga could succeed in unifying Japan.
