Matthew Prior 1664-1721 Poems on Several Occasions was written while impeached and in custody 1715-1717. An English diplomat and Poet. He was a popular contributor to The Examiner newspaper. dated 1725 Roman MDCCXXV
AUTHOR. Matthew Prior was a brilliant poet and Satirist. Attended Westminster School becoming fellow in 1688. In 1687 he wrote the highly acclaimed- the City Mouse and the Country Mouse. In 1690 he was secretary to the embassy at The Hague, then to become the King's secretary. In 1697 helping to conclude the Peace of Ryswick. He was sponsored - well paid to write a collection of satirical poems in the early 1700's. In 1710 under-secretary of state and commissioner for the Tories. A diplomat of the highest order he negotiated with the French Court. As a paid ambassador, helped negotiate the Treaty of Utrecht.
Impeached and kept in custody from 1715-1717 by Robert Walpole's new Whig party, Maintained a cheerful calm philosophy during his custody he wrote THE PROGRESS OF THE MIND - a long humorous poem. The epic poem 'SOLOMON' and the 'POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS'. Retired to Wimpole Hall Cambridgeshire. Buried at Westminster-Abbey in Poets Corner.
