Original woodblock print - Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) - Kabuki actor Iwai Hanshirô - Japan - ca 1820-30s
Print by Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞; 1786–1865).
It is an actor print (yakusha-e), depicting an actor in a scene from a kabuki play.
It is the actor Iwai Hanshirô V, the name that the actor Iwai Tojaku adopted from 1804-1832. He was one of the best onnagato actors (female roles), mainly the akuba type (malicious middle-aged woman who indulges in extortion, blackmail or murder. Usually, a smart person, who can bluff, fight and scam. She is also often possessed with a certain sense of loyal chivalry).
The print is drawn "Gototei Kunisada ga" and dates from 1804-1832 (a kiwame seal, 1815 - 1842), published by Matsumura Tatsuemon ((松村辰右衛門).
Condition: reasonably good, some restored wormholes and one larger (top centre - with reconstruction). Good frame (= the colour blocks fit on the mother block)
Nice print quality, somewhat spotty. Beautiful, full lines.
