Original woodblock print - Utagawa Ichiyotei Yoshitaki (1841-99) - Actor Jitsukawa Yaozo I as the yakko Watabei 奴渡平 (?) subduing a foe - Japan - around 1860-70 (Late Edo/Early Meiji)
Kamigata print by Utagawa Yoshitaki 歌川芳滝 (1841-1899) with the representation of actors (yakusha-e) in a scene from the kabuki theatre.
The actor is Jitsukawa Yaozo I, known for his "Wagoto or gentle style" of acting.
Kamigata of Osaka prints (Kamigata-e 上方絵 ) are in sharp contrast to the wide variety of subjects in Edo prints. They mainly show actors in scenes from the kabuki theatre, with rare exceptions for other subjects.
They are also characterised by the more refined finish using all kinds of techniques and a more luxurious edition. Precious metal pigments (gold and silver) are also often used to lend the prints more shine and appearance.
Usually the chuban size is used.
Condition: good condition with a very small restoration at the top left corner. Still fairly fresh colours, beautiful lines and a good register (matching the colour blocks to the mother block).
The print will be shipped registered by bPost Tracking.
