In 1950, at the request of the ‘Libreria dello stato’ in Rome, Salvador Dali committed to creating 100 watercolours illustrating the 100 songs of Dante's Divine Comedy to create a Deluxe Edition. In 1951, some of the watercolours were made, and they were exhibited in Rome. The Master’s work continued slowly and with the successive governments, one decided that Dante's work should be illustrated by an Italian painter and had the contract between Libreria dello stato and Salvador Dali rescinded. Salvador Dali - whose work was at a very advanced stage - became its owner again. In 1958, Salvador Dali has just completed the lithographs of Don Quixote for Joseph Foret and offers to take over the illustration of the Divine Comedy. Joseph Foret, engaged with Salvador Dali in the realisation of the Apocalypse is not able to accept this proposal and he makes contact with his friends of the “Heures Claires” who are in every way able to accept. In July 1959, the contract was signed with Les Heures Claires, who bought the exclusivity and all the copy rights. The 21 copies on Japan paper reserved for Joseph Foret and the 4,765 copies on Velin de Rives (text and illustrations) are engraved and printed together under the direction of Jean Estrade.
