Artist:
Tatsumi Shimura worked as an illustrator and painter, becoming well known for his portraits of beautiful women.

"Five Figures of Modern Beauties" Series:
In 1953 Shimura designed series "Five Figures of Modern Beauties" including this print "Reflection in the mirror (Marumage – Natsu). The carving and printing of these "bijin-ga" prints is truely outstanding; quoting Phillip Roach of The Honolulu Academy of Arts, "(Shimura's) prints are technical marvels." Shimura's lovely, elegant woodblock portraits are rarely seen in the market and are a nice choice for a collector of shin-hanga bijin-ga.

Condition:
Very Fine. Skillfully over-printed hairlines; superb "bokashi" (gradation of colors) shading to face and "zabuton" cushion; light "gauffrage" to outline of kimono and hand mirror; highly detailed carving. Large, deeply embossed "kanji title" in center bottom margin. One very light discoloration in the upper left margin, far away from image and really almost invisible. This print has never been framed and stored in archival boxes for the last decades.
