Beautiful copy of this rare title, pages in good condition, but wrapper (as almost always) teared (see picture). Number 180 of an edition of 1000, with all the wonderful etchings in excellent condition.
Leaves are protected under a printed folder, 147 pages, 19.5 x 14 cm.
Once Les Fleurs du mal has been published, Baudelaire, his publisher and the printer were successfully prosecuted for creating an offense against public morals. They were fined, but Baudelaire was not imprisoned. Six of the poems were suppressed, but printed later as Les Épaves (Brussels, 1866).
¶ Henri Le Riche, (1868-1944) is a French painter, sculptor, engraver and illustrator. He was a pupil of William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. Winner of the Rome engraving prize in 1888, he notably exhibited at the salon des artistes français. He was elected to the academy of fine arts section engraving in 1935.
