‘Mala’ prayer necklace adorned with a central pendant with the shape of a crafted lotus flower.
Acquired during my travels in Asia.
The lotus symbolism in Buddhism is that the seed and the flower appear together, it is the simultaneousness of the cause (the seed) and the effect (the flower) in the causal law of the universe which is one of the major concepts of the Buddhist philosophy. In addition, the lotus draws its vital substance from the mud to flourish above the water. Therefore, this ‘mud’ represents sufferings, troubles, desires, which are the very breeding ground of our development. It is thus possible to transform one's karma through enlightenment, the goal of buddhahood, through our awakening to the law of causality.
The Mala accompanies followers of Buddhism in their prayers and is used to count the recitation of mantras.
In Buddhism, the mala is held in the left hand, and is woven in the right hand with the help of the index finger and thumb. This gesture symbolises the release of suffering and the filling of the body with positive energy.
