Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016. Malick Sidibé’s first known work was reporting photographs, taken during the parties organised by young people fond of music and freedom as the country prepared for independence. In 1962, he opened the ‘Malick Studio’ in Bamako. Studio portraits made up the bulk of his work. People come would come from everywhere to have their portrait taken by Bamako’s eye... He was noticed at the first Bamako Photography Encounters, his works were exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and then in major galleries and museums around the world. He received the Hasselblad prize in 2003 then the Lion d’or in 2007.
