From a large private collection, with works partly unpublished of extraordinary value. The artist was auctioned by Sotheby's and by the main Italian auction houses. A choice aimed at creating a great retrospective and at promoting the artist, restoring to him his proper value in the Italian art market. Borgonovo was an important landscape painter and portraitist of the Italian 20th century, who took part in six Biennale editions and won the 1920 Prince Umberto Award with his work ‘Tramonto dicembrino nella campagna Milanese’, then purchased by the Edison Company of Milan. A refined and passionate painter, he did not confine himself at the honours and recognitions he acquired between the 1920s and 1930s in the most important Italian showcases, but he preferred to success the profound reasons for life and art that drove him away from the Milanese territories. His ‘pictorial happiness’ remains ‘extraordinarily free’ in his formation and growth, ‘with a singular extraneousness not only to the 20th century but also to the trends of his time’, as far away as it was from the anxieties of the avant-garde and from the tormenting doubts about the destiny of painting. In his painting one does not feel the weight of 20th- century nor of traditional art’.
Artist Borgonovo Giovanni was a Lombard painter active during the 20th century. He was born in Milan in 1881 and died in Milan in 1975, at the age of 94.
