This surrealistic chess set was created by the artist Man Ray with Marcel Duchamp, both known for their emphasis on abstract mental processes. In 1920, Ray created a chess set in accordance to surrealistic style, of which he was one of the greatest exponents.
This work respects the original structure. This chess set uses pure geometric forms, among which the pyramid piece stands out, in homage to the funerary pyramids of the Egyptian pharaohs. The king figure represents the pyramid of the Egyptian king, while the queen represents the conical headdress of a medieval queen. The bishop has a bottle shape, in homage to the preparation of healing liquors. The horse represents intelligence and is featured in the form of an abstract parchment found in a violin. The chess, manufactured in Germany, is made of chrome-plated solid steel in silver and pearly black.
Display board included, made of wooden marquetry and metal combining the colours of the pieces to add a better look to this artistic set.
