Valerio Adami (* 1935, Bologna) is an Italian painter, designer and engraver, recognized as one of the most important living European artists, Valerio Adami is distinguished by his personal style, synthesis of Cubism, Pop art and Futurism.
He began to study painting at the age of 10 under the tutelage of Felice Carena. From 1951 to 1954, he studied at the Brera Academy, and in 1959 he had his first solo exhibition in Milan. Initiated in an expressionist style, he gradually developed a highly graphic aesthetic inspired by French cloisonism, a post-impressionist movement in which bold shapes and coloured flat ones are bordered by black lines. Adami's clearly stylised works resemble commercial images that align him with other members of pop art. Among his influences: Roberto Matta, Warhol, Jasper Jones or Kooning among others. Other notable activities, in 1972 he produced the film Vacances dans le desert with his brother, Giancarlo, and in 1975 he was the subject of a seminal essay by Jacques Derrida entitled "+ R: Into the Bargain". He has had several important retrospectives, included in the Centre Pompidou of Paris in 1986 and in the Museum of Art of Boca Ratón in 2010.
