Beautiful large Thangka Milarepa
Jetsun Milarepa (Rje-btsun Mi-la-ras-pa), circa 1052–1135 was one of the most important Tibetan yogis and a student of Marpa. Milarepa is one of the main teachers of the Kagyü school of Tibetan Buddhism.
The biography is based on the Mi-la-rnams-thar written by Gtsang-smyon he-re-ka rus-pa'i-rgyan-can (1452–1507). This is a historical legend and not historiography.
Milarepa was born in a rich family, in the village of Kya, Ngatsa, in Tibet, and was called Mila Thöpaga (Thos-pa-dga), which means "pleasant to hear". When his father died, his uncle and aunt took possession of the family's fortune. His mother asked Milarepa to leave the house and to learn magic.
