With 33-page introduction by Andrew Lang.
This handsome edition of Coleridge’s works, edited and introduced by the scholar, folklorist and literary critic Andrew Lang (best known today as the creator of the famous ‘coloured’ Fairy Books), is illustrated by the British artist Patten Wilson (1869-1934).
Ten of the eighteen plates in the volume are devoted to Coleridge’s celebrated poem ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. These include a superb illustration of nymphs and water-snakes – very reminiscent of the work of Patten Wilson’s contemporaries H.J. Ford and John D. Batten. The intricate Art Nouveau cover and title-page designs are also by Wilson – the title page in particular being wonderfully detailed, with tiny figures hiding in the foliage.
Wilson’s Coleridge illustrations (and particularly his ‘Ancient Mariner’ sequence) are among his most important works, but he was also a frequent contributor to the notorious periodical ‘The Yellow Book’, and was hired as technical adviser for the later numbers, after Aubrey Beardsley had been banned from the Bodley Head in 1895.
Contents crisp, very clean. Foxing/offsetting to first and last leaf, scattered foxing elsewhere (mostly light; a few spreads more heavily affected), several pairs of gatherings stretched, one nick, short closed tear to last leaf, bookseller's blind stamp to front free endpaper. Top of page block with a little tarnishing to gilt, other edges very bright. Binding somewhat loose. Boards and spine with discoloration and marks as shown, bumping, rubbing and wear to extremities; head of spine with three nicks.
