Altar, Lacquered sutra box - Gold, Lacquer, Wood - Decorated with the kamon 家紋 (family crests) of Toyotomi and Ichijo clans - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)
Beautiful tidying box from the Meiji period, late 19th century or early 20th.
This box on its pedestal would have contained a Sutra, the book which relates to the teachings of Buddha.
The book inside the box is a Buddhist text titled "Shakumeinyo kyoron sho" 釈明如教諭書 and was published in 1871 (Meiji 4). Shakumei was a teacher and perhaps a soshu (suzerain) of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist sect.
The book was also in the National Diet Library collection. See: https://dl.ndl.go.jp/info:ndljp/pid/1089490
Some wear, breakage, cracks, missing lacquer and gold, small chips etc. on the box
The pedestal is very old by the looks of it as well as its patina and wear.
The inside of the box is lacquer finished in nashiji style, very nice work.
Piece probably having belonged to a member of the Toyotomi clan or to a member of the government.
