Nasa photonumber 111-KSC-69P-734 Original NASA issued 8x10 B&W press photo (on Kodak paper and not a re-print) showing first photo from Mars by the Mariner 6
Photo has original NASA caption and ID on reverse.
Mariner 6 flew over the equator and imaged a band down to 10 degrees South showing the various dark and light features near Sinus Meridiani (the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity would land in this region some 35 years later). During a period of 17 minutes, Mariner 6 acquired 24 near-encounter images that showed heavily-cratered areas, chaotic terrain, and the south polar cap. Instruments indicated that the polar cap gave off infrared radiation consistent with solid carbon dioxide ice. Some 98 percent of the Martian atmosphere was found to be made up of carbon dioxide
