A rare wooden statue depicting Saint Cecilia, patroness of musicians, holding a small-size organ.
This statue is a so-called "poupée de Malines" or "Mechelse poppetje", made in the city of Mechelen for private devotion or to be displayed in house altars or so-called "besloten hofjes" (retables which housed several of these statues surrounded by silk flowers and precious textiles).
Mechelen. Circa 1510/1530.
From a private collection in the Netherlands. An old inventory label with number written in ink to the back as well as another written in paint. Underneath there are some traces of old stucco, by which this statue would have been fixed onto a small plinth.
