A very nice example of a seldom seen Early 20th century martial arts fighting sword.
The Big Swords Society (Chinese: Dàdāo Huì) was a traditional peasant self-defence group, widespread in North China during the Qing Dynasty and noted for their reckless courage.
Both the Big Swords and Red Spears societies had taken part in the Boxer Rebellion in North China in 1900.
During the first three decades of the 20th century, many peasants emigrated to the Northeast from Shandong and Hebei provinces where the Boxers had been most influential. The peasants revived the Big Swords Society as a measure of self-defence against the depredations of bandits and warlords.
The condition of the sword is very good.
It is difficult to determine if the green coloured rope covering the grip is the original and it might be a replacement.
See the photo's for a good impression.
