¶ Willem Gerard Hofker (1902-1981). The primary purpose of this book is to make the work of the Dutch artist Willem Gerard Hofker widely known. The main focus is on the period 1938-1946, when Hofker and his wife Maria Hofker-Rueter worked in the former Dutch East Indies. An undisputed highlight in this East Indian oeuvre are the many hundreds of paintings, drawings and watercolours that Willem Hofker produced until the end of 1943, some of them during the last pre-war 'golden years', others already under Japanese occupation.
There is an enormous interest in Willem Hofker's paintings, drawings, etchings etc. and his (especially Balinese) work is sold at auctions for fabulous prices. Recently a Balinese painting from 1939 was sold for 750,000 euros...
