"Trattato completo delle malattie veneree. Clinica iconografica dell'ospedale dei venerei. Raccolta di osservazioni seguite da considerazioni pratiche sulle malattie che sono state curate in cotesto spedale . Prima traduzione italiana riveduta ed annotata dal dott. Isacco Galligo, per Demetrio Serantoni disegnatore, incisore. Ricord Philippe"
This is the first Italian translation of Ricord's famous "Traité complet des maladies vénériennes", 1851.
It is a lovely folio (34 cm tall): 208 pages and NOT 50 leaves of coloured lithographs (as in the French edition and as listed in many Italian printings) BUT actually 66 plates of chromolithographs showing the signs of venereal disease on various parts of the body. The extras are "bis" and "ter".
Strangely -- I am not sure it this was intended -- some of the plates seem to have been over-washed by strokes of brown, while others are not. This gives a most unusual appearance to the plates. Many are perfectly clean but others have this application of wash which makes them seem aged. The book is full of interest, but very gory: buyer beware!
The condition (apart from the wash, which may well be a decorative effect), is lovely and the binding original. This is a spectacular book, rare and especially collectible in this condition. Note the three owner's stamps.
