This is a bag, folded open.
Shahsevan nomads made this mafrash - they travelled around in northern Iran and the south of the Caucasus.
Late 19th century, early 20th century.
The colours have remained very fresh - natural, plant-based dyes.
The technique is called Soumak.
Embroidered on a woven base, where the loose threads at the back just stayed loose.
This bag may have served as a type mini hammock for a baby, opened up like this.
It could also have been a closed bag, from which the smaller panels at the ends were removed.
Made for personal use by these nomads.
Collectors and connoisseurs hang this on their wall as an object.
