Antique painting, oil on canvas, XVII century, depicting a portrait of Cosimo III de’ Medici in armour (1642 - 1723).
The son of Ferdinando II de' Medici and Vittoria Della Rovere, he was the penultimate Grand Duke of Tuscany belonging to the Medici dynasty.
He ruled for 53 years, from 1670 to 1723, the year of his death.
His reign was the longest in the history of Tuscany.
The Grand Duke was portrayed in armour between 1655 and 1665 by Justus Sustermans (1597 - 1681), an artist who worked extensively as a portraitist for the Medici, becoming a court painter.
That portrait, now located at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica of Palazzo Corsini in Rome, depicts the protagonist at a younger age than this canvas, which instead shows close physiognomic affinities with the portrait of the Grand Duke painted by Baldassare Franceschini known as il Volterrano, between 1676 and 1677, now preserved at the Royal Palace in Warsaw.
Our canvas should also be dated, in our opinion, in the same time frame.
With a beautiful lacquered frame, from a fairly recent period.
In fairly good overall condition, considering the age of the painting, a few scattered restorations and some slight peeling of the surface, mainly on the background. There are no conservation problems, the original canvas has not been relined, but only reinforced with canvas bands along the four sides. The stretcher seems to have been replaced recently, probably at the same time as the application of the reinforcement bands.
Canvas size: 63 x 46.5 cm. Frame size: 77 x 61.5 cm.
