This charming still life has a rather interesting history as evidenced by the labels on the back. Put up for auction at the Hotel Drouot in Paris in 1883 and proposed as a signed work by Jean-Simeon Chardin, there is no doubt that the quality of the work speaks for itself today.
The basket of plums is typical of Chardin's work, as is the partially peeled citrus fruit. Next to it, a green branch from a lemon tree is delicately deposited in a glass of water. The finely orchestrated composition is placed in a beautiful Louis XVI oak frame (with some damage and restorations)
The canvas was reinforced and re-mounted on a modernstretcher, very beautifully crafted.
