Original woodblock print - Utagawa Kunisada II (1823-1880) - Number 18, Matsukaze, from the series Lady Murasaki's Genji Cards (Murasaki Shikibu Genji karuta) - 1857
The Genji letters of Lady Murasaki - A nice design of a Kunisada series. He described scenes from the classic Japanese novel 'The Tale of Genji'. Each engraving shows a chapter of the well-loved drama of Murasaki on prince's Genji life, a noble with de Minamoto clan, from the Heian period. These figures, superbly designed, are placed in marvellously detailed environments with a decorative edging in the shape of confetti. The clam shell cartridge in the top die identifies the chapter an scene. This illustrations offer exotic views on the court life in Japan during the Genji period. The Boston fine arts museum has this series in its collection.
Very good condition woodblock print for its age, a slight scratch on the sky level.
