In 1943, the distiller Herman Jansen asked Marten Toonder to draw him a gnome that could serve as his trademark for his gin. In response, Toonder created the comic 'Het recept van Pinneke Proost'. An old Schiedam legend. Jansen liked the story and Toonder - an employee of Hans G. Kresse (who would later become famous with Erik de Noorman), completed the sketches.
