Ecce Homo - Oil paint on copper - 16th / early 17th century (ca. 1600).
It is of extraordinary quality. The colours are still very fresh and bright. The gaze of Christ looks right through you.
Copper painting came into vogue in Italy at the end of the 16th century. Northern painters learn this technique by travelling to Italy. Copper has important advantages: it is impervious to craquelure and painting on the smooth copper surface without texture makes a tremendous detailing possible.
Flemish School - Framed by a 19th century imitation turtle frame.
On the back are still traces of wax seals and a note from a previous owner.
The photos are part of the description. Will be carefully shipped with track and trace.
