In Africa, animals play the leading role in myths, legends, proverbs and tales, which perpetuate and vivify arts of speech.
These serve as models to women and men.
Since an early age, the latter acquire their knowledge, also through initiation, by referring to codes drawn, among other things, from the oral tradition which attributes a determined value, positive or negative, to different animals, domestic or wild, present in their daily environment. The representation of a vast bestiary constitutes the visible face of a powerful and complex symbolic, operating within initiation ceremonies, propitiatory rituals, therapeutic practices, acts of divination or witchcraft.
Carved for an individual destined to serve these, the sculptures were unique, rarely more than one by village, and would belong to a single person. After the death of their owner, these figurines were kept by the family and transmitted to several generations in the village.
