Friedrich Wilhelm Martini [1729–1780] was a German physician and conchologist. Martini conceived the idea of publishing the first large-scale encyclopedia of shells, illustrated with hand-coloured plates. His ambition was to describe and portray every type of shell known, an ambition that was impossible to satisfy. Shortly after the third volume of the "Neues Systematisches Conchylien-Cabinet" was printed, Martini died. The publication was continued by Johann Hieronymus Chemnitz, a Danish cleric who, between 1779 and 1795, added another eight volumes.
