Original woodcut by Kasamatsu Shiro (1898-1991) - Published by Unsodo - Bamboo in early Summer - Japan - Heisei period (1989–2019)
Shiro studied art with Kaburagi Kiyokata and made his first woodblock print designs for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919. Shiro designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for a long period of time, and became famous for his romantic landscapes and images of traditional Japanese life. Between 1952 and 1960 he also created over 100 woodblock print designs for Kyoto publisher Unsodo. Shiro is generally regarded as one of the top-notch shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan.
Commentary: A remarkable shin-hanga view through a bamboo forest at nightfall. The full moon shines and the bamboo stems are gently moved by the wind. A warm glow is coming from a lighted house. Wonderful colours with a range of green and blue shades, creating a nightly atmosphere rich in shadows. Very skilful design with a beautiful composition.
There is a small notch at the bottom right corner (outside of the woodblock print). This is the so-called 'Kento', characteristic for publisher Unsodo when found in this spot. Kento is the registration system that is traditionally used by Japanese makers of woodblock prints to ensure that the different colours are well aligned (each colour is applied separately through a separate woodblock).
Signed by Shiro, in the bottom right of the print a red artist seal.
Published - Unsodo, publisher's seal in the left margin
